Rustenburg Municipality Opens GBVF Safe House

100 Day Challenge | Safe House | GBV Shelter

Cllr Virginia Mputle, MMC responsible for Public Safety at the Rustenburg Local Municipality, welcomed the audience at the official opening ceremony of the Rustenburg GBV (Gender-Based Violence) Shelter Facility. The event, held at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, marks a significant addition to their Women’s Month programs.

The establishment of GBV shelters is a top government priority, led by the Department of Social Development (DSD). These shelters support victims of crime and violence, including women and children, through the Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP). The DSD plays a crucial role in implementing government priorities on GBV, focusing on response, care, support, and healing.

The ceremony was honored by the presence of the MEC for the Department of Social Development in the North West, Honourable Basetsana Sussana Dantjie, and traditional leaders.

Rustenburg’s new GBVF shelter opening kicks off their End GBVF 100-Day Challenge, set to take place from August 9 (Women’s Day) to November 17, marking the start of the 16 Days of Activism. The Rustenburg GBV Shelter Facility is a testament to the ongoing commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and providing a safe haven for survivors.
